Quilts in a Material World
By Linda Eaton
Winterthur Museum & Country Estate in Delaware is the ancestral home of Henry Francis du Pont. His celebrated collection of quilts includes one from Mary Remington, who was 23 when she created the whitework quilt, which survives along with her letters to her husband.
The themes for each chapter of this book are drawn from those letters which describe how her life was affected by politics and war, the volatility of international trade and growth of the American textile industry.
Quilts in a Material World: Selections from the Winterthur Collection is more than the presentation of a significant quilt collect. It is also an extraordinary evocation of daily life in the early American republic.
